🐱 Cribbage Rules
Overview
Cribbage is a classic card game for two players. The goal is to be the first to reach 121 points (or 61 in short games) by scoring card combinations during play and in your hand.
Game Flow
Deal: Each player is dealt 6 cards. You must select 2 cards to discard into the Kitty (Crib) (an extra hand belonging to the dealer). This leaves each player with a 4-card hand.
Starter Cut: The remaining deck is cut to reveal a Starter Card (shared card). If this card is a Jack, the dealer immediately scores 2 points (known as "His Heels").
Pegging (Play Phase): Players take turns playing one card face up, adding its value to the running count (starting at 0).
Face cards count as 10; Aces count as 1.
The running count cannot exceed 31.
If you cannot play a card without exceeding 31, you say "Go", and the other player scores 1 point (or 2 points if they hit exactly 31). If you hit exactly 15, you score 2 points. Pairs score 2 points, runs of three or more score points equal to the length of the run.
Show Phase: Both players count their kept 4-card hands plus the starter card. The non-dealer shows first, then the dealer shows their hand, followed by the dealer showing and counting the Kitty (Crib).
Scoring Combinations
Fifteen-Two: Any combination of cards adding up to exactly 15 scores 2 points.
Pairs: A pair scores 2 points. Three of a kind scores 6 points (3 pairs). Four of a kind scores 12 points (6 pairs).
Runs: Consecutive cards of any suit (e.g., 5-6-7) score 1 point per card.
Flushes: If all 4 cards in your hand are the same suit, score 4 points (plus 1 if the starter is also that suit). For the Kitty (Crib), a flush requires all 4 kitty cards and the starter to be the same suit (5 points).
His Nobs: If you hold a Jack of the same suit as the starter card, score 1 point.
